I will give you five words …

There is one word that sums up leadership. And, the same for culture, one word. What about conduct? Well, there I will give you five words. Five words that stop discussions about whether conduct risk is the same as people risk. Also, that conduct risk is someone breaching the code of conduct. From a legal standpoint that may be true, but at five past nine on a rainy Monday morning it is quite useless. Conduct risk is a build up of poor behaviour. And, as the poor behaviour builds up so does the chance of the world finding out about you for all the wrong reasons. Examples abound: the UK Post Office, Boeing, Toronto Dominion, Carillion . And that is to name but four. The root cause of risks crystallising will be conduct risk. Which is to say, poor behaviour running rampant. But the root cause of conduct risk is not people breaching a code. It is leadership, or lack of it, pure and simple.
