Imagine a good CEO …
Imagine a good CEO, good NEDs and a wise balance of power between the Chair and the CEO. What could go wrong? Well, in a word, plenty. For example, heaven forfend that trusted executives turn out to be untrustworthy. And, that down in the bottom of the organisation bad things are happening. Bad things these Executives would prefer remained hidden. Where does that leave the CEO? The NEDs? Finding out who they could trust far too late, that’s where.
Pressure from below … pressure from above …
This is a different proposition to a ‘gone to bad’ CEO who hijacks the firm. This is a good CEO, a good Chair and good NEDs. So pressure from below up to the board. Who will blow that whistle in time. Will anyone? Then. pressure from above. Owners who pile pressure on the board to hit those targets. Take more risk, be dynamic, show the way.
The point of all this is to say that a board of directors has a tough job on their hands. And, working out who you can trust is paramount.
