The Directors' challenge

How do you know ...

… two costs: financial and psychological …

Speaking up and whistleblowing. A topical subject, unfortunately. This vidcast covers a point we tend not to talk about. The impact on business of a firm that suppresses speaking up. The focus and intellectual bandwidth wasted on suppressing bad news. And in dealing with difficult people, where ‘difficult’ describes those who do speak up. There are two costs: financial and psychological. The financial cost begins as an overhead, suppressing people costs time and money. The psychological cost is of people who know the truth but cannot speak up out of fear. And of those who do speak up and are ‘put through the mill’.

Thanks to Sybille Raphael, Joint Chief Executive of Protect, for the opening quotation. “Governance is absolutely essential to whistleblowing, and whistleblowing is absolutely essential to governance”.
