Paper tweaking and the push back …
Speaking up comes from the top. By which I mean it comes from behaviours observed in the boardroom. The idea that what happens in the boardroom stays in the board room is ludicrous. The paper tweaked by the CEO to disguise the truth and make it ‘presentable’. The pushback by the CEO and CFO to any challenge by a Non-Executive. Non-board members inside and outside the board room see this behaviour. From which they work out which way the wind is blowing. And, it isn’t in the direction of open challenge and speaking up.
This JASVidcast looks at three different levels of board effectiveness. The aim is to gauge the impact of NED behaviour on speak up.
In short, NED behaviour defines speak up. All the consultancy and action plans in the world will not produce speak up if the NEDs won’t do it themselves. A speak up action plan needs successful delivery in the boardroom first.
